Saturday June 6th – Road Trek to Wenchi Crater Lake, In and around Addis Ababa, Ethiopia with Adera Foundation

Our road trip outside of Addis Ababa Saturday allowed us to experience the mountainous southwestern region of Ethiopia, learning about the culture and making friends with these hard working farmers and their families that call the Oromia region of Ethiopia their home. Part of our mission was to trek down a steep and rocky road to beautiful Wenchi Crater Lake which is formed from a extinct volcano, the top of which is over 11,000 feet above sea level. We then boated to Deber island, home to a Christian orthodox monastery that dates back to the 14th century (more on this amazing place in a future post). Afterwards we avoided the tortuous 3 mile 1640 ft climb back up to a height of 11,000 ft elevation climb by riding out on ponies. I was fortunate to have the company of two ethipian children that I befriended on my hike down, Terefea and her brother Habbu, I tell their story in a separate post.
